Egg yolk colour

How does the yolk colour come about?

The yolk colour comes from the food which the hen ingests. Natural colorants, such as carotinoids in maize, grass and wheat, give the yolk its colour. The more the hen pecks up of these forms of feed the stronger the colour becomes.

Natural carotinoids are however chiefly used in laying hen feed in order to support vital functions in the organism. Many carotinoids are converted in the body into vitamin A. They provide protection for body cells and the skin, help to detoxify, strengthen the immune system and improve eyesight.
